Vipp was founded in 1939 by Holger Nielsen. Born in 1915 in the small Danish town of Randers, Holger trains as a metal spinner.  Holger Nielsen makes the leap into business at the age of only 17 and almost by coincidence. It all begins one spring Sunday in May 1931 when he makes his usual visit to the local stadium to support his favorite football team. Fate has it that his ticket is drawn in a raffle, and he wins a car. Holger loves cars, but as he has no driver’s license, he decides to sell the car and invest the money in a metal turning lathe.  This marks the birth of Holger Nielsen’s metal factory where, a few years later, he produces the very product that will go on to bring him fame: the Vipp pedal bin.

Not much has changed about the original design of the iconic Vipp Pedal Bin since Holger Nielsen made the first bin in his shop for his wife in 1939. That’s because, as Nielsen says himself, “good design never goes out of fashion” and Vipp’s long, enduring run as one of the most recognizable brands and styles for the kitchen and bath is living proof.

Original Vipp Bin:

It was 1939 when Holger Nielsen’s wife Marie opened a salon, asking him to help furnish it. Wanting to impress his wife, Nielsen spent hours in his shop, producing the very first Vipp pedal bin. Among Marie’s customers, the Vipp bin became an instant hit. Marie’s customers noticed that the Vipp Bin would be perfect for their husbands’ medical practices and the orders began rolling in, forcing Nielson to begin producing the bins on a larger scale. Soon, the bin that was meant to be a personal gift to his wife became a standard in Danish medical practices.

Vipp’s continued dedication to the original philosophy and integrity of design imagined by Holger Nielsen is carried on today thanks to the company remaining a family businesses for three generations. Today, Jette Egelund is joined by her two children – Sofie, who serves as art director, and Kasper, who serves as sales and marketing director.

After 70 years of development, dedication, and design - Vipp is an internationally respected brand. Still appearing in medical practices, but also throughout homes and businesses across the world. Vipp products are truly versatile, practical, and designed for life.
